Bone Augmentation

Bone Grafting

For a dental implant to be successful, it requires good quality and a sufficient quantity of bone. Unfortunately, after a tooth is extracted, the underlying bone shrinks and resorbs over time. This means there may not be sufficient bone volume to allow for your dental implant placement. You may then require a bone augmentation procedure known as bone grafting. This helps provide a stable foundation for dental implants to integrate successfully.

The Bone Augmentation Procedure

Bone grafting can increase bone volume to allow for subsequent dental implant treatment. Typically, bone grafting procedures include particulate graft material or block grafts. Multiple different bone graft materials can be used, and this will be discussed in further detail at your appointment. Following a bone grafting procedure, 3-6 months of healing time are usually required before a dental implant is placed.

After your top back teeth are extracted, the maxillary sinus can extend to the tooth’s area, resulting in less bone volume available. A molar sinus lift procedure is then considered to lift the floor of the sinus and place bone graft material. After the healing period is complete, a dental implant can be placed into the site.

After a comprehensive medical and dental examination, we will discuss any concerns and treatment plans in further detail.

While most people are candidates for dental implants, not everyone is automatically eligible. Ideal candidates generally have good overall health, adequate bone density in the jaw to support the implant, healthy gums, and a commitment to maintaining oral hygiene. A thorough evaluation by a dental professional can determine if dental implants are suitable for an individual’s specific needs.

Yes, one of the great benefits of dental implants is that they allow you to eat normally. Dental implants are designed to function like natural teeth, providing stability and strength for biting and chewing various foods without restrictions.

Dental implants offer superior durability, natural feel, and functionality compared to dentures or bridges, lasting a lifetime with proper care and preserving jawbone health.

The time to get permanent dental implants can vary, but it normally only takes a few months, including consultations, surgery, healing time, and the placement of the permanent crown or restoration.

During the dental implant procedure, patients are under sedation, which ensures minimal discomfort. After the procedure, some soreness and mild discomfort are normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain medications, and most patients report that any discomfort subsides quickly within a few days.
